POETRY

I woke up this morning feeling slightly heavy, Last night I cried so deeply over a piece of poetry that was written for International Women’s Day, and somehow it reached into a part of me I didn’t expect. It made me think about the kindest, sweetest, most loving woman I’ve ever known.... My Nan. Even writing this now brings tears to my eyes as she truly was the kindest human i know!

She lived through some of the darkest and most difficult times of being a woman, The bullshit that came from society and men! The last six years of her life.... see truly got to live and tell everyone to fuck off, She glammed up and she danced! 6 years wasn't enough to make up for what women went through in that generation and before them! Anyways, Last night I felt everything for her all at once. Gratitude, love, admiration… and this quiet feeling that she would be proud of me. I honestly think she would look at the way I’m living my life and feel a sense of peace about it, like I’m doing the things she would have wanted for me.

It also made me realise I need to understand poetry more. The way it works is extraordinary. It seems to tap into places in your mind, your body and your soul that everyday life slowly dulls or numbs. Somehow it finds those hidden corners and brings them back to life.

I think poetry might always be something that helps keep my heart soft. Because as you get older, life does harden people & i get it. You begin to understand why some older souls carry anger or resentment towards the world.

But poetry feels like a reminder not to lose the tenderness & not to stop feeling deeply, even when the world gives you plenty of reasons to close yourself off.

some information on POETRY! IM OBSESSED. Truly!

Reading poetry can make you cry deeply because poetry bypasses the logical part of your brain and goes straight to your emotional memory.

Here are a few reasons why it can hit so hard:

1. It Names Feelings You Couldn’t Explain

Poetry often puts words to emotions that have been living inside you quietly. When you read a line that perfectly captures something you’ve felt but never expressed, it can feel like being suddenly seen — and that release can bring tears.

2. It Unlocks Stored Emotion

Our brains store emotional experiences in layers. Certain words, rhythms, or images in poetry can unlock feelings you didn’t realise were still there. It’s similar to how music can suddenly make you cry.

3. Poetry Is Intimate

Unlike most writing, poetry is stripped down to pure feeling. There’s no distraction — just the truth of an emotion. That kind of honesty can feel overwhelming, especially if it mirrors something personal in your life.

4. Your Brain Processes It Like an Experience

Studies show poetry activates parts of the brain connected to memory, empathy, and emotional processing. So you’re not just reading it — your brain is almost living it.

5. You’re Emotionally Open

People who feel deeply, think deeply, or are very introspective tend to react strongly to poetry because they are already tuned in to their inner world.

Crying while reading poetry isn’t weakness — it’s actually a sign of emotional awareness and empathy.

Poetry doesn’t just tell a story. It quietly says, “You’re not the only one who has ever felt this.”

And sometimes that recognition is powerful enough to make the heart overflow.
